For a school assignment. Worth 50% of my Expressive grade D:

We had to appropriate a piece of classic art in one of a few styles. I picked a surrealism piece by Hans Kanters, hopefully you can see the resemblance XDDD [link]

Also we had to make our own logo for Design Logo so that's there in the corner- gonna use it as a signature :D

Feel free to give me feedback- what could I improve on?

I plan to use Gesso to print this onto a canvas (eep, hope it works..) and maybe stick a couple of peacock feathers on if I can find em XD

The final- it took about 3 hours of rubbing to get it onto the canvas!! XD

Oooo0oo, love the concept!
I'll try my best to give feedback, as there is always something to improve on! :dummy:

Okay, textures! I think that, because you were aiming for a simple background, would look awesome with a texture. There are lots of good resources on DA that can offer fantastic textures and textural brushes, if you feel like manually creating the tex yourself.

It needs way more colours and tones, I think. Sometimes, making a multi gradient in the background to start off with before you go into colouring works well. You can also go over the image with harmonizing colours and shades, then fooling around with the different types of layers (overlay, soft light, etc) will help the image feel less 'flat'?.

I love her face, especially her eyes! But, I do think that she needs much more emotion. It will add more attraction to the overall painting. Is she supposed to be scared? depressed? sinister? At this point, i'm not too sure. Something as simple as slightly arching the eyebrows, or opening the eyelids more and pinpointing the pupils will add much more to the face. :stinkeye:

I also think that the bottom of the canvas feels a bit empty. Would it be better if you expanded the red flower formation into a beautiful/scary dress? I do love the idea of the tree branches extruding from her skull, with the mushies! And the long needles add a nice touch of morbid elegance. :D

The overall image, I believe, needs much more shading to it, which is just a matter of patience. Just adding subtle layers of shading again and again will make the painting much more appealing! Bumping up the contrast can help with this process.

Yeah, uhm, apologies for the long comment. @.@ My intention is not to be negative or cold, I just wish to help you improve! I think that, one of the main ways to get better is to observe and practice, which just comes with a lot of time. Keep painting!

Whoooooa, thanks so much for all this :iconcryforeverplz: (and at like.. 4am..? :o)!!

I intentionally kept it quite untextured because it's going to be Gesso'd onto a canvas- I did a practice print on a small canvas and it gives it a cool kind of weathered look with tattered edges and little holes where too much paper was pulled away XD So that sorts that part!

The reason I don't do gradient bgs is cus it makes the file size huge and my computer is 7 years old and couldn't handle it LOL. I totally would, otherwise.. oTL I'm not very good with colours, so I will try to add more tones in future :D

Okay, I've altered her expression a little- since the image is so death-y but she's not scared, just a bit nervous :p

I plan to put some feathers at the bottom, maybe pink ones that kind of merge with the flowery dress thing :D

I've added more shading (I really need to study where shadows go..) and used a sharpen filter over the image, do you think it looks better now? Thanks again for the help!!

I think it looks better! Especially her hair!
Oopsies, didn't know it was going to go onto a canvas! In that case, I wouldn't worry about the textured background. XD But I guess you'll just keep that tip in mind when you're making paintings in the future. :>

I like the idea of feathers!

A seven year old comp. :c That's unfortunate. It would really make a difference to your work if you had a computer that could run graphic applications properly. Even a cheap, modern computer would be a huge improvement. I'm sure you could get something adequate for about 90 bucks. :saddummy:

Yay, thanks!!
Yeah, I do sometimes use textures but it can be hard to find one that suits the picture XD

^_^

I dunno if it would make a difference to my work but it would be hella faster!! Plus I'd stop kicking the desk in frustration :p
